The Main Hiring Challenge Facing UK Accounting, Audit, and Tax Employers in 2025

By Caroline Furness, published 8 February 2026

In 2025, UK employers in accounting, audit, and tax faced a talent market that remained fiercely competitive. According to our annual survey, 59% of hiring leaders cited high competition for similar skills as their biggest challenge. Close behind, salary expectations (53%) and counteroffers from other employers (47%) were significant barriers, reflecting a market where skilled professionals are in high demand and short supply.

Audit teams, particularly within professional services, struggled to retain newly qualified staff, who were often lured away by competing offers. Meanwhile, finance and tax departments in sectors such as consumer goods and manufacturing faced mid-year departures as employees pursued better bonuses, flexible working arrangements, or more attractive opportunities elsewhere.

Other challenges reported by employers included slow internal decision-making (31%) and limited career progression (31%), which can prolong vacancies and reduce candidate engagement. Geographic or relocation constraints (23%) and limited employer brand visibility (18%) were less commonly cited but still notable.

The findings highlight the importance of streamlined recruitment processes and transparent career pathways in 2026. Organisations that act quickly, communicate clearly, and demonstrate growth opportunities are best positioned to secure top talent in a competitive landscape.
